There aren't many (any?) growth roles at venture capital funds. But as with most things at Contrary, we're a little bit different.

As the first growth hire, you'll help accelerate the adoption of our breakout media brand: Startup Search.

Right now, Startup Search is a website and newsletter which has earned thousands of subscribers and hundreds of thousands of impressions. And we have big plans for it.

You’ll help Startup Search become the world's most helpful, curated resource for tech-oriented job seekers nationwide.

With competitive comp and upside in the venture fund, we intend to partner with you for the long haul. You will report to our Director of Platform, Nina Stepanov.



We expect the Head of Growth to wear a lot of hats and evolve as the Contrary platform continues to expand. You will:

  • Develop and execute a marketing strategy to grow Startup Search newsletter readership and drive website membership
  • Proactively identify channel optimization and growth opportunities, surfacing dependencies and blockers to the Platform team and cross-functional stakeholders
  • Effectively communicate insights to identify lead generation and cross-platform opportunities
  • Align all new marketing assets and products/features to our core brand attributes to drive brand affinity
  • Oversee and delegate projects to a team across the Contrary network
  • Define yearly goals, strategies, tactics, success metrics, and roadmaps
  • Work on creative, "moonshot" growth projects that nobody has ever done before



We expect breadth and rigor both intellectually and operationally, but are very amenable to alternative backgrounds. Your educational and work histories are far less important to us than what you've personally accomplished. This role may potentially be a fit if:

  • You have 3-6 years of experience in growth marketing, ideally with experience building or managing a growth practice in a similar or adjacent space
  • You have experience rigorously testing and scaling new paid and unpaid marketing channels from the ground up
  • You're hypothesis-guided and are comfortable prioritizing a large number of ideas against a finite amount of resources
  • You move quickly and feel comfortable taking full ownership of projects with little guidance
  • You are goal-oriented and aspirational with a natural inclination to think beyond the immediate needs of a project into its long term outcomes
  • You can learn new tools as necessary to get the job done, and are not tied to a specific tool stack
  • You work hard enough to be a world-class operator, but don't make work your entire life
  • You're a startup nerd like us and love working with entrepreneurs :)


Location: Remote preferred. We will be HQ'd in San Francisco after the pandemic, but all team members will have the option to stay remote.
