Bill Gates-Backed Tech Startup seeks VP / Director of Business Development

Join us with your vision, expertise, and passion! Modern Electron is looking for a dynamic Business Development leader to lead the commercialization of our innovative energy technologies. You will build on and strengthen our existing set of signed commercial deals in the HVAC heating appliance industry and drive the go-to-market of a new technology to decarbonize the world’s buildings. We are looking for an entrepreneurial candidate who will build out our commercial team, working cross-functionally with product, engineering, science, and regulatory departments to both refine Modern Electron’s go-to-market strategy, execute new partnerships, and find new customers. The position reports to the CEO.

The ideal candidate has experience creating demand for novel technologies, structuring partnerships, development, and sales, distribution & licensing agreements in at least one of the following industries: hardware technology, cleantech, HVAC, or chemicals (in particular hydrogen). You have already succeeded in a startup environment and thrive on the energy of a fast-moving startup. You are a strategist at heart, creative in your approach to building relationships and executing deals that bring innovative technologies to market. You possess strong analytical abilities to quickly grasp new technology while evaluating market opportunities and their potential financial returns. You want to deep dive into the product and become an expert who can speak credibly on value propositions, scaling technology, and structuring win-win deals to an array of audiences, from customers, partners, senior executives, investors, to our core engineering team members. Our team is made up of builders who get their hands dirty and want to change the world, and you are excited to join them in the trenches to make your mark.

 

Top Qualifications

  • 6+ years of experience in business development with experience commercializing novel hardware technologies, industrial gases value chain, sourcing and structuring deals that span from tech & product development, pilot testing, to sales & distribution
  • At least one prior role at a startup

 

 

Roles And Responsibilities

  • Own our go-to-market strategy including business development, product / market requirements, partnerships, executing value-add contracts, product pilot testing, and launching new products
  • Defining the value proposition across each of our market opportunities and customer segments 
  • Lead Modern Electron’s interactions with manufacturing, technology, and sales/distribution partners
  • Partner with the co-founders as well as heads of Engineering, Product, Science, and the overall business to ensure our product roadmap supports our company’s vision and strategic goals
  • Build a world-class commercial team

 

Other Qualifications

  • Experience owning overall commercial and go-to-market strategy for a hardware technology and partnering on execution
  • Strong leadership skills and experience managing / influencing teams in a cross-functional startup environment
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with senior-level executives and middle managers from a diverse set of partners, vendors, and stakeholders
  • Experience leading partnerships, including structuring complex commercial contracts, with a long track record of delivering results and building trust
  • Strategic thinker who possesses strong business judgment and the ability to identify and evaluate risk and opportunity at the commercial, development, and regulatory levels
  • Comfort and curiosity to learn the science behind our technology. Engineering, science, and or product background is desired
  • Extremely well organized with the ability to balance multiple concurrent priorities in a fast-paced and dynamic startup environment
  • Entrepreneurial mindset – proactive, persistent, intellectually curious, collaborative, and excited to tackle a wide range of new topics
  • Strong understanding of clean energy markets, policy trends, and value propositions is highly desired
