At Sherpa, our mission is to help travellers move freely around the world, and shift the way the world's leading travel providers think about borders. We are enabling travel companies to regain trust in international travel, and building the next border crossing experience. We are looking for team members who are excited about our mission, committed to personal growth, and ready to take ownership of their work.

Our primary office is in Toronto, and more than half of the team has been onboarded remotely during the COVID-19 lockdowns, in three countries so far.

A bit about the role:

Sherpa is reinventing the international travel experience.

Our products make it easy to understand border crossing rules and requirements, and apply for a visa while buying other travel products with leading companies (including Expedia, Booking.com, American Airlines, British Airways, Lufthansa, TripActions, Flight Centre, and many others). We are applying new technology to very old problems, and we need Front End Engineers who are prepared for that challenge. People in this role will work independently, with stream-aligned cross-functional teams, in a very social remote environment.

You'll be responsible for:

  • Working and collaborating closely with the design and product teams to create new experiences
  • Advocating for best tools, practices, and processes, improving our engineering standards
  • Improving our component library and design system with modern tools like ES6, Typescript, Storybook, Angular, Redux, SCSS and Webpack
  • Sharing experience and insights with your team, engineering generally, product managers, and the whole Sherpa team (if you want to)
  • Setting and maintaining a high bar for quality of code and quality of user experience
  • Shipping highly maintainable and testable code

You are a good fit if:

You love making new, better experiences a reality. When you look at Sherpa's website you want to understand all of the details of how our products work, and you immediately have ideas for how to make those experiences better. We're looking for someone who:

  • Is very confident in their abilities with Front End Web Development.
  • Can point to things they have built that exemplify great experience.
  • Is very familiar with the tech stack that Sherpa is using (and should be using).
  • Is excited about ownership, and a wholistic view of technical product development.
  • Is a clear thinker and highly effective communicator.

FAQ

What is your approach to remote work?

We are a "remote-first" company. We provide resources to enable everyone in the company to work from home or anywhere in the world (with reliable internet access). We also have an office north of the Distillery District in Toronto, where we have workspaces for daily use or hot-desking.

What is the interview process like?

Our screening starts with three questions:

  1. What makes you excited about this role?
  2. What is your most relevant experience?
  3. What work are you most proud of in your career, education, or personal life?

Once we have established a basic fit based on these questions we will schedule a "Technical Review", where we will assess some basic competencies of the role, using the relevant tools for the role.

If we find a good fit we move on to our interview ladder where we assess the most important component, cultural fit. We ask questions that don't relate to the role, but focus on the type of environment you want to work in, and the values that drive you.

What kind of benefits do you offer?

  • Early stage stock options for Sherpa's equity, and options education so that you understand their value and how to use them.
  • Competitive base salary and flexible merit-based bonuses (cash or equity).
  • We have a comprehensive benefits program for Canadians through CanadaLife, and for people outside of Canada we work to figure out the closest parallel to that.
  • Flexibility to work from home or in an office environment, including assistance with immigration to Toronto or future offices.
  • Team-based learning and development funds.
  • Inclusive home-office budget (whatever you're into).
